March 16-20, 2020 Living Legacy Pilgrimage from Memphis to Selma (5 days/4 nights)

This five-day Pilgrimage, designed for people ages twelve (12) and over, focuses on exploring sacred American Civil Rights Movement sites in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee through a multi-generational lens.
  • We visit Holly Spring, MS, where Ida B. Wells Barnett, co-founder of the NAACP was born, and then travel on to Birmingham, AL, where the 1963 bombing at the 16th Street Baptist Church that killed four young girls, Denise McNair, Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley, woke up the world to the civil rights struggle.
  • In Montgomery, we’ll visit the new Equal Justice Institute’s National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Maya Lin Civil Rights Memorial at the Southern Poverty Law Center. We’ll also learn about the influence of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the start of his ministry.
  • In Selma, we’ll march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, meet a veteran of Bloody Sunday, and explore the role of children in the Selma Voting Rights Movement.
  • The trip continues through Marion, where Jimmie Lee Jackson’s shooting by a State Trooper sparked the Selma to Montgomery March.
  • We'll then return to Memphis, TN, where we’ll visit the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. 
On the Journey
In addition to visiting historic sites, we meet veterans, many of them children and young adults during the Civil Rights Movement. As a spiritual pilgrimage, we reflect on what we experience together so when we each return home we can apply what we have learned to make a difference in today's world.

The registration fee covers a on-board faculty and musical director, four-nights’ lodging, meals, site admissions, honoraria for guest speakers, and bus transportation.
 
You are responsible for travel to and from Memphis, TN, personal gifts, donations, suggested tips, and incidentals

​What does the fee cover?
The registration fee is quite inclusive, covering all lodging, meals, site admissions, and bus transportation during the Pilgrimage. You are responsible for travel to and from Memphis, TN, and personal gifts, donations, suggested tips for the driver ($10 per day), tips for room accommodations ($3-$5 per day), and incidentals during the Pilgrimage. Access to ATMs is limited so please carry enough cash, credit cards, travelers checks, etc, to handle these expenses. 

Transportation to Memphis
This trip begins and ends in Memphis, TN. Nearest airport is the Memphis International Airport. 

Memphis is also serviced by Amtrak. ​

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champagne is coordinating travel by train and carpool from Urbana, IL. Contact the church for more information.  

NOTE:  The trip is dependent on getting a minimum number of registrations. We will make a decision about whether it's a go by no later than January 31, 2020, so please don't make your airline reservation until after that date. Living Legacy Project cannot be responsible for trip cancellation fees incurred if you reserve before this date. 

We will gather in Memphis, Tennessee, at 8:00 am on March 16, 2020, and will return to Memphis by 6:00 pm on March 20, 2020. You will receive an email with information about where we will meet.

Lodging for the nights of March 15 before the trip begins and March 20 after the trip ends are not covered in the registration fee. If you need lodging on those nights, you are responsible for making your own reservations. 
Cancellation Policy
If you cancel before January 31, 2020, you will receive a full refund minus a $100 administrative fee. Although we will do our best to provide refunds after this date, we can only do so if we can refill your seat.

​Travel Insurance
We're sorry, but we cannot offer a refund in the event your transportation is cancelled or delayed for any reason. We suggest you consider purchasing trip insurance in case weather or illness prevents you from participating. 

Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional travel insurance benefit available on some plans. Usually, this benefit is an additional charge on the plan, but it comes with extended coverage that you may find worthwhile.

Financial Assistance

People who are privileged by means of their color or economic advantage have contributed full or partial sponsorship to our financial assistance fund. 

You can apply for a sponsorship based on either of the following categories:
  • reparations
  • financial need
The deadline for receipt of sponsorship
​applications is February 8. Following notification of awards, the balance of fees is due by February 29, 2020. ​

Donate to support equal access for all - contribute to an Individual Reparations Account
The value of this Living Legacy Pilgrimage is priceless. The cost of the trip is an opportunity for individuals to take concrete action toward healing the wounds of enslavement. We encourage participants who are privileged by means of their color or economic advantage to contribute a full or partial payment to our IRA account (Learn more about Individual Reparations Accounts). This amount will allow a person whose life has been impacted by color discrimination, by the legacy of enslavement, or by economic disenfranchisement to fully participate in the pilgrimage. All of us will be richer for these reparations.
If you would like to donate to the scholarship/reparations fund, please complete this donation form (you can also donate when you register). Your donation will go to support scholarships/reparations for the 2020 Alabama Pilgrimage and/or sustainability for the Living Legacy Project. You can make your designation when you make your gift.
