About the Living Legacy Project
Founded in 2008, the Living Legacy Project conducts pilgrimages to important sites in the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The Living Legacy Project grew out of the Reverend Gordon Gibson's and his wife Judy's passion for sharing the Civil Rights Movement story. Recognizing the importance of not only capturing the stories of the Movement, but of understanding what this story teaches us about the continued work that still needs to be done, the late Reverend Dr. Hope Johnson, Dr. Janice Marie Johnson, and Annette Marquis formed a partnership with the Gibsons to establish the Living Legacy Project. In November of 2013, the founding members, along with singer/songwriter Reggie Harris, formed the Living Legacy Project Board, with a goal of developing long-range sustainability in service of our mission.
Today, we offer the Living Legacy Pilgrimage and other experiential learning opportunities to deepen understanding of the Civil Rights Movement by visiting the sites where it happened and talking with the people who lived it.

Our Vision and Mission
The Living Legacy Project’s vision is a just and equitable world free from racism and other systems of oppression. Mindful of this vision, the Living Legacy Project’s mission is to provide experiential education about the American Civil Rights Movement that challenges, inspires, and equips people from diverse backgrounds and identities for justice work in their communities and beyond. Opportunities for Learning
The Living Legacy Pilgrimage, one of several opportunities we offer, is a bus trip through the South to understand the civil rights journey. In the Spring of 2012, the Living Legacy Project sponsored the first ever gathering of Unitarian Universalist veterans of the civil rights movement. As the Project develops, additional opportunities in line with its mission will be made available. Stay tuned for future developments as they unfold. In March 2015, the Living Legacy Project hosted Marching in the Arc of Justice, a four-day conference in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Selma Voting Rights Campaign and to explore the civil rights and social justice issues of today. In the Spring of 2020, the LLP moved online with dynamic programs about voting rights, music of civil rights, and the Civil Rights Movement. Although we plan to continue with online offerings each year, we are happy that as of November 2022, we are back on the bus! The Living Legacy Project, Inc is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
