Spring 2023 Education Series

Thursday, March 30, 2023 - Reflections on the Movement with Dr. Steve Schwerner

PictureDr. Steve Schwerner
We are deeply honored to announce that Michael (Mickey) Schwerner's brother, Dr. Steve Schwerner, will join us for a dialogue with Dr. Janice Marie Johnson on reflections from the Civil Rights Movement and the lasting effect of racism in the US.

On June 21, 1964, three Freedom Summer organizers, James Chaney from Meridian, Mississippi, and Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner from New York City, disappeared after being released from jail in Neshoba County, Mississippi. Seven weeks later their bodies were discovered buried in a nearby earthen dam. The investigation showed that the murderers were members of the local White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, the Neshoba County Sheriff's Office, and the Philadelphia Police Department

You won't want to miss this special and rare opportunity to hear from Mickey Schwerner's brother, Steve, about how this horrific event shaped his life, his family's life, and the lives of so many others!

Thursday, April 27, 2023 - The State of Voting Rights Today

As we hurl ourselves into another Presidential election cycle, join us for conversation with a panel of voting rights activists, including Ms. Patricia Lassiter, a veteran of local, state, and federal electoral campaigns in Georgia, Florida, and Alabama, on the state of voting rights today. Have we made progress? Have we lost ground?  What are the challenges to voting rights today? How can you get involved to ensure secure elections open to all?

Don't let those who want to restrict voting win in 2024 and beyond!
