Mississippi Living Legacy Pilgrimage

THE MOVEMENT: MISSISSIPPI MOMENTS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

October 19-23, 2022

Although this Pilgrimage is completed, reviewing this page will give you an idea of the type of Pilgrimages we offer, a possible itinerary, and approximate price information.
Did you know that the Mississippi murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago, roused the resistance into a Movement—that is, the American Civil Rights Movement?

Understanding what is happening in our world today means taking the time to learn our history, so we can more effectively work against 21st century racism. How else can we move to an equitable future?

Join the Living Legacy Project on a 5-day
pilgrimage to learn Mississippi’s Civil Rights Movement history.
PictureReggie Harris
The Pilgrimage will be co-led by singer/songwriter/storyteller Reggie Harris. Reggie will share songs and stories of the Movement and will introduce you to some of the powerful social justice music he has written for our time.

A songwriter of great depth and passion, Reggie Harris writes from a personal sense of mission that merges a world wise point of view with a singularly hopeful stance that life, though often challenging, is filled with possibility and hope. His songs reveal thoughts about life and love and some of the deep aspects of the human experience and cover topics from his own personal journey to world issues and history. When: October 19 through 23, 2022
Where: Starts and ends in Memphis, Tennessee

On this Mississippi-based Pilgrimage, we will gather in Memphis, Tennessee and then travel to Jackson.  From Jackson, we'll take day trips and return to Jackson each night. On the final day, we’ll travel back to Memphis for your trip home.

On this Pilgrimage, you will:
  • Tour the powerful National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel at the site where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.
  • Travel south through the Mississippi Delta to honor the legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer, whose attempts to desegregate the Mississippi Democratic Party and ultimately the national Democratic Party shook the foundation of politics from coast to coast.
  • Acquire a deep understanding of the brutal 1955 murder of fourteen-year-old Emmett Till, a case that continues to astound with new revelations. It’s never too late for justice.
  • Explore the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson to learn the story of Freedom Summer and the massive mobilization of Black voters in that state.
  • Engage in deep conversations with veterans of the Civil Rights Movement, including Hezekiah Watkins, who, as a young boy, was arrested and put on death row at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman, Mississippi, just for being curious about the Freedom Riders.
  • Meet the incredible family of Vernon Dahmer, murdered by the Klan in 1966 in retaliation for his voting rights work near Hattiesburg.
  • Visit a restored Rosenwald School, a symbol of the decades of work that preceded the 1950s and 60s.
  • Hear how a small, rural church outside Philadelphia, MS, experienced the terror of the KKK one night in 1964. Learn about three civil rights workers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, who came to investigate the beatings and arson and were subsequently found murdered.
  • Deepen your knowledge and understanding of today’s ongoing fight for racial equality and voting rights.
Join this Pilgrimage and invite your family and friends to accompany you.

Registration is open now and is capped at 40 participants. Reserve your seat on the bus today!
