October 28-31, 2018 Mississippi Living Legacy Pilgrimage

THE MOVEMENT: MISSISSIPPI MOMENTS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD
 
Did you know that the Mississippi murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago, roused the resistance into a Movement—that is, the American Civil Rights Movement?
 
Understanding what is happening in our world today means taking the time to learn our history, so we can more effectively work against 21st century white supremacy. How else can we move to an equitable future?

Join the Living Legacy Project for a 4-day direct experience of key elements of Mississippi’s civil rights stories.
 
When: October 28 through 31, 2018.
 
We will gather in Jackson with day trips east and north. On this Pilgrimage, you will:
  • Engage in in-depth conversations with Veterans of the Movement.
  • Explore the new Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.
  • Meet the family of Vernon Dahmer, murdered by the Klan in 1966 in retaliation for his voting rights work near Hattiesburg.
  • Visit a restored Rosenwald School, a symbol of the decades of work that preceded the 1950s and 60s.
  • Hear how the town of Philadelphia, MS, where three civil rights workers—Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner—were murdered in 1964’s Freedom Summer, has been transformed from hatred to love through the reckoning of its history. No more secrets!
  • Travel north through the Mississippi Delta to honor the legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer, who attempted to desegregate the Mississippi Democratic Party as part of her commitment to ensuring that every Mississippian has a right to vote.
  • Acquire a deep understanding of the 1955 murder of Emmett Till, a case that has just been re-opened by the Justice Department. Friends, it’s never too late for justice.
  • Deepen your knowledge and understanding of what is happening today.

Registration Information

General Registration is open
 $985 (double occupancy rate, per person)
 $1,175 (single occupancy rate, per person)

​What does the fee cover?
The registration fee is quite inclusive, covering:
  • Lodging with check-in 10/28 and checkout 11/1
  • All meals from dinner on 10/28 through breakfast on 11/1
  • Site admissions
  • Honoraria for speakers and special guests
  • Staff stipends and expenses
  • Bus transportation during the Pilgrimage
You are responsible for:
  • Travel to and from Jackson, MS
  • Transportation from the airport, train station, or bus station to the hotel
  • Personal gifts
  • Donations
  • Suggested tips for the driver ($10 per person per day)
  • Tips for room accommodations ($3-$5 per room per day)
  • Incidentals during the Pilgrimage
Access to ATMs is limited so please carry enough cash, credit cards, travelers checks, etc, to handle these expenses.

This trip begins and ends in Jackson, MS. The nearest airport is the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport. 

Jackson is also serviced by Amtrak. ​

The program will end at 9:00 pm, Wednesday, October 31. Plan your departure anytime on Thursday, November 1. 

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations before August 31, 2018, will receive a refund of all but a $50 administrative fee. Although we will do our best to provide refunds after this date, we might not be able to if we cannot refill your seat.
